The results of the survey have been reviewed and summarized. So, what have we learned?
There were 49 members who completed the survey (27 women and 22 men). There is interest in all APPL skill levels. On the Survey Response Summaries below, we’ve listed the person’s name without contact information. Phone numbers and email addresses can be obtained from the “Member Directory” on the SCOV Pickleball Club website (scovpb.org/members only/member directory). (Click on each level to see which members are interested in that level).
Level 2.5: 7 responses
Level 3.0: 20 responses
Level 3.5: 17 responses
Level 4.0+: 5 responses
Thirty-seven players are open to playing on a “Mixed” team (results above indicate who is open to playing on a mixed team).
Level 2.5: 4 responses
Level 3.0: 15 responses
Level 3.5: 14 responses
Level 4.0+: 4 responses
Level 2.5 – the APPL Southern Region coordinator is trying to garner interest in men’s, women’s, and/or mixed 2.5 flights for the upcoming season. At this time there is no guarantee that our region will have enough teams to play at this level. Even with this uncertainty we suggest that the seven people who responded to the survey reach out to each other and determine if there is any interest in forming teams. If yes, then talk to and start recruiting your peers to play. If you decide to go forward a captain must be identified.
Level 3.0 – Five people identified themselves as potential captains. These people should coordinate with each other to determine the best path forward. For a men’s only or women’s only team additional recruitment will be necessary. The numbers seem to be there for a Mixed team. However, four of the women who said “Women and/or Mixed” have committed to play on a SCOV 3.0 women’s team. Captain(s) should contact them to determine if they are interested in playing on two teams.
Level 3.5 – Three people identified themselves as potential captains. These people should coordinate with each other to determine the best path forward. The numbers appear to be there for a Men’s team or a Mixed team. The possibility may also exist for a SCOV Men’s 70+ “Quad” team.
Level 4.0 – One person identified themselves as a potential captain. Additional players will be needed to form a Mixed or Women’s team. Each team can bring in three players from the level below. In 2025, there was one Women’s 4.0 18+ 50+ flight with seven teams and one Mixed 4.0/4.5 flight with eight teams.
Other information about SCOV teams and APPL:
If you are recruiting additional players, please remember that a minimum of eight players are required to comprise a SCOV APPL team. All players must be SCOV Pickleball Club members in good standing. Each team must have a designated captain and co-captain. Captains and co-captains can be players or non-players. Many club members did not complete the survey, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are not interested in APPL. So, ask your friends to consider playing with you on a SCOV APPL team.
Our regional coordinator has asked that captains reach out to him as soon as possible and not wait until team registration opens in September/October. It’s important for captains to be identified early so that they can communicate with the regional coordinator, especially as it relates to the 2.5 level and the 3.5 Men’s 70+ Quad flight.
Captains – Nine members indicated that they would consider being a captain. You will see their names at the top of the Survey Response Summaries for each level of play. The captains will be responsible for selecting their team members and their team’s philosophy of play. For those nine people, if you are going to go forward as a captain let the committee know so we can connect you with the regional coordinator. Email the committee at APPLSCOV@gmail.com. Please send questions or comments regarding the survey results or the formation of teams to the committee at SCOVAPPL@gmail.com.
THINKING ABOUT PARTICIPATING ON AN APPL TEAM:
Below is a questionnaire to assess your interest in participating in the Arizona Pickleball Players League (APPL) for the 2026 Winter season (Jan-Mar). If you are interested, please complete the questionnaire. A minimum of eight players are required to comprise a SCOV APPL team. All players must be SCOV Pickleball Club members in good standing. Each team must have a designated captain and co-captain. Captains and co-captains can be players or non-players.
